The Design Detail That Brought Back a Childhood Memory

Here's what I'm curious about: Have you ever had a seemingly small design detail trigger a powerful memory or emotion? What was it, and why did it resonate so deeply?

The difference between a good designer and a great one? Sometimes it's knowing which hinge finial will make your client cry.

Last week, I presented two door hinge finial options - acorn style and a steeple style -
to a client whose living room redecoration we've been working on since February.
The moment she saw the acorn design, her face lit up. "My son used to pick up acorns and sing about them," she said. That $43.39 detail instantly became the heart of her redesigned space.

Here's the thing: We never once discussed acorns in our six months of working together.

The Questions That Matter

As a Toronto interior designer and decorator, I don't start projects by showing you fabric swatches or paint chips. I start by asking questions that might seem unrelated to interior design:

  • What kind of vacations do you love taking? Why?

  • What's your favourite season?

  • What colours make you feel most at home?

  • What kind of music do you listen to?

  • What art speaks to you?

  • What ambience do you want in this space?

For this client, the answers painted a clear picture: "cozy" came up repeatedly. Her husband wanted something "lounge-like, somewhat dark, enveloping, inviting, warm,
yet sophisticated."

They never said "autumn." They never mentioned acorns. But when I saw that acorn hinge finial option, I knew instantly she would choose it.

Listening Between the Lines

This is what luxury interior design really means—it's not about expensive materials or trendy styles. It's about understanding someone so deeply that you can translate their essence into the details of their space, even the ones they'll never consciously notice.

"Cozy" plus "warm" plus "enveloping" equals someone who finds comfort in nature's rhythms. Someone for whom autumn isn't just a season—it's a feeling. Someone whose son singing about acorns wasn't just a cute childhood memory — it was a moment that defined what "home" means to her family.

After months of conversations about functionality, lifestyle, entertaining needs, and aesthetic preferences, I develop an intuitive understanding of my clients. I start seeing their spaces through their eyes. I know what will resonate before they do.

Why Taking Time Matters

This project has been unfolding since February at a pace that works for my clients. Some designers might see that as "slow." I see it as clients who understand that good design can't be rushed—and a designer who refuses to rush them.

Every decision, from major furniture selections to a set of $43 hinge finials, has been considered thoughtfully. No pressure. No artificial deadlines. Just the space to get it right.

And "right" doesn't mean what's trendy, or what I think looks best. "Right" means creating
a space so personal, so deeply connected to who they are, that a door hinge can bring tears of joy.

The Strategic Value of Deep Discovery

This is why bespoke interior design for residential homes in Toronto costs more than hiring someone to "just decorate." You're not paying for fabric selection, or furniture placement—you're investing in a designer who:

  • Asks the questions others don't think to ask

  • Listens to what you say and what you don't say

  • Develops intuition about your preferences over time

  • Spots the perfect detail even when you haven't articulated it

  • Creates spaces that reflect your personal story, not just design trends

When my client saw that acorn finial and shared the story about her son, we both knew: This wasn't just a living room redesign anymore. It was a space that would hold their family memories, their values, their story.

The Result? A living room that doesn't just look sophisticated and cozy—it feels like home in a way that's impossible to articulate, but unmistakable when you experience it.
