The 10 Elements of Interior Design That Actually Matter

Over the past few weeks, I've been sharing what makes interior design truly transformative and not just beautiful, but strategic. But there's a gap between knowing WHAT matters and understanding HOW it actually happens. Let me show you.

That's exactly why I'm hosting a live LinkedIn session on December 16 at 12:30 PM: "Interior Design That Delivers - Every Time." I'll be walking through my design process and the elements I prioritize to ensure successful project outcomes.

But let me give you a preview of what I mean.

It's Not About Pinterest Boards

When I start a project, I don't begin with paint swatches, or furniture catalogues. I begin with 10 essential elements that will determine whether your space truly works for you.

Here are three that might not be so obvious:

1. Sound (and the Power of Silence)

Most people think about how a room looks, important, yes; I also think about how it sounds.

Does your home office echo during Zoom calls? Does street noise invade your bedroom? Well- planned design also addresses acoustics: rugs, proper kinds of doors and modern insulated windows, and strategic furniture placement to create the quiet you need to think, rest, and recharge.

For homeowners, sound control isn't a luxury. It's essential. Your home should be a sanctuary from noise, not an amplifier of it. It's been medically studied and I believe goes without really saying that certain levels of decibels of noise register adversely impact our physical health and mental and cognitive health.

2. The Illusion of Fire

There's a reason humans are drawn to fireplaces, it's primal. Fire represents warmth, safety, gathering. But real fireplaces aren't always practical (or possible).

I design spaces that capture that cocooning feeling through layered lighting, warm textures, and focal points that draw you in the same way a hearth does. It's about creating psychological warmth, not just visual appeal.

Speaking of which...I'm currently solving a fireplace design challenge that's taught me more about creative problem-solving than any textbook ever could. When I make a mistake, it's my mission to resolve it. I wrote about this in a previous newsletter entitled: "Perfection Doesn’t Make a Better Home, Personalization Does", if you're curious. A realistic solution is in the works.. More on this another time.

3. No-Scent Design

This might surprise you, but I design with absence in mind. No artificial fragrances. No overpowering materials.

Why? Because your home should be a neutral sanctuary where YOU choose what sensory experiences to add, not ones imposed by finishes, fabrics, or furniture. This is especially critical for individuals with sensitivities, or those who simply want control over their environment.

Your space should smell like nothing until you decide otherwise.

The Other Seven Elements

These are just three of the 10 elements I walk through with every client. The others? Feeling, texture, functionality, nature integration, lighting flexibility, beauty, and art; and yes, how these all work together to create a space that doesn't just look successful, it feels like success.

Most designers focus on the visual. I focus on the experiential. That's the difference between a beautiful room and a transformative space.

Join Me Live

If you want to understand how these elements come together and how to know if your current space is missing any of them, join me live on December 16 at 12:30 PM ET.

I'll be walking through my full design process, answering your questions in real time, and sharing what most designers won't tell you about creating spaces that truly deliver.
